We bought the same shopping list at Aldi, Tesco and the other five big supermarkets for two months and were amazed to find where the prices had actually dropped.

500g spaghetti – 20p (down from 55p)

A loaf of white bread – £1.19 (remained at the same price)

Six Braeburn apples – £1.19 (remained at the same price)

Breakfast cereals – £1.69 for 36 bisks of wheat

TOTAL: £7.96 (was £8.46)

2.Lidl

Six free-range eggs – £1.18

Aged cheddar – £2.79

Two pints of semi-skimmed – 95p

500g of spaghetti – 20p

A loaf of white bread – £1.19

Six Braeburn apples – £1.19

Breakfast cereals – £1.69 for 36 wheat bixie

TOTAL: £9.19

3.Asda

Six free-range eggs – 90p (was £1.20)

Aged cheddar – £2.75 (was £2.10)

Two pints of semi-skimmed – 95p (remains the same)

500g of spaghetti – 70p (instead of £1)

A loaf of white bread – £1.25 (remains the same)
