Portland’s SE mall hit hard by burglars

No suspects have been identified or arrested so far.

PORTLAND, Ore. — A mall in southeast Portland was hit hard over the weekend, with half a dozen businesses targeted and vandals leaving a trail of damage.

Six businesses in East Burnside Plaza on Southeast 55th Avenue and East Burnside Street had all closed Monday morning. Shops were damaged and some burglarized over the weekend.

A Sherwin Williams paint shop, nail salon, pub and hair salon were some of the places affected. The Portland Police Bureau said the vandalism and burglaries likely took place between 5:30 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. Saturday morning.

While some businesses reported missing items, others like the Sherwin Williams store only had their glass doors shattered. Fay Garrison, sales associate, said the fact that so many businesses were affected at once is very concerning.

“It makes me very uncomfortable, just because this mall is usually full of really nice people and knowing that something like this could happen here without anyone knowing about it was really disconcerting,” Garrison said.

So far, the Portland Police Department has not made any arrests or identified any suspects in this case.

“I think most of us who work in these businesses are trying to create a safe community where we can all associate. Hopefully we can increase security in some way in this mall “, said Garrison.

For now, companies are focusing on replacing their doors.
