Paid parking + surge | Ala Moana Mall

We all know that parking in Waikiki is a priority and it is getting harder and harder to find free parking in Waikiki. Well, the situation is about to get worse, probably much worse. I guess we should have seen it coming, but we were caught off guard. We find it a sad end to an era for us at least, free parking during the day at the Ala Moana Mall.

Paid shopping mall parking started in April and will expand.

Four areas of the mall currently have paid parking, but the writing is on the wall. There are clearly two things at play:

  1. The mall is looking to increase its profits through a very lucrative, low-impact paid park.
  2. They have long wanted to prevent people from parking at Ala Moana who were not shopping there. An example is the hotel, where we attended events and parked in the mall for free.
  3. Finding parking at Ala Moana Mall has long been a challenge.

The current variable rates are as follows:

1. For the parking we just checked, 1-4 hours was priced at: $2.88 per hour plus tax and service charge. The total cost is $4.30/hour.

2. For more than four hours, reduced rates apply.

6 hours: $14.39 plus taxes and fees.
10 a.m.: $19.18 plus taxes and fees.
Full parking 24 hours: $28.78 plus taxes and fees. As far as we know, there won’t be in and out privileges associated with 24-hour parking, but it might be a good idea for them.

3. Other parts of the mall offer cheaper parking starting at $1.92 per hour plus taxes and fees.

4. We see a reference to peak parking, but we don’t know what that means or how it will be implemented. We are reminded, of course, of Uber’s high prices, which can be ridiculous.

No parking validation options at this time.

There is no indication of store parking validations. So for now, at least, it’s all paid for if you choose those parking spots, and it’s handled exclusively through the seller’s phone app.

We haven’t seen how much parking violations will cost, but we can imagine they will be high.

Advance parking reservations will be helpful.

One of the positive aspects is that you can reserve your parking space in advance. We can’t tell you how much time we’ve spent over the years roaming the mall looking for parking during busy times of the year and especially on weekends.
