NCPD arrests man who set fire to basket of items after stealing them

Jatinder Singh, 29, who is homeless, had stolen and set fire to a shopping cart full of goods from Five Below in North New Hyde Park, cops say.


Arson Bomb Squad Detectives report the arrest of a homeless man for an incident that occurred in North New Hyde Park.


Detectives say officers responded to a 911 call for a robbery that had just occurred and an active fire of a cart full of items, in the side parking lot at Five Below, 697 Hillside Avenue.


Upon arrival, officers observed a shopping cart on fire and were informed by Five Below employees that a male subject had passed through all purchase points with merchandise from the store, without attempting to pay for the items.



Detectives say Jatinder Singh, 29, homeless, was observed on video striking a match and setting fire to the shopping cart before leaving the scene.


After viewing the video, responding officers searched the area and located Singh who was arrested without incident.


Upon arrest, the accused Jatinder Singh was found responsible for the following other arson attacks:


  • 9/10/22 1:47 AM – Outlook Safety, 226-10 Jericho Turnpike, Bellerose Terrace, a burnt out dumpster caused damage to the unoccupied building at this location.

  • 9/10/20 2:55 AM – G Resnick Realty, 249-02 Jericho Turnpike, Bellerose, Burning potted flower pots damaged the canvas canopy at this location.


Defendant Jatinder is charged with petty larceny, 5th degree arson and two (2) counts of 4th degree arson. He was arraigned in the First District Court, 99 Main Street, Hempstead.
