Owen Sound Police Department Sgt. Craig Matheson said police were called to a large parking lot on the east side around 6.40pm after a car drove over a curb and into a wooded area, then hit a shopping cart before coming to rest in a ditch .

When officers arrived, they found a driver and a female passenger passed out in the front seats of the car.

Police determined that the man’s ability to drive was impaired by drugs, Matheson said in a police news release.

A 38-year-old Owen Sound man has been charged with drug-impaired driving, possession of fentanyl and breaching a probation order.

Earlier on Saturday, a city police officer was patrolling an east side neighborhood when he came across an oncoming vehicle that did not have its headlights on and was straddling the center line of the street , the police press release said.

The officer stopped the vehicle shortly after 5 a.m. and an 18-year-old unlicensed driver was charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle. The man then provided breath samples to police, which revealed he had consumed more than double the legal alcohol limit before driving. The vehicle was seized.
