A man was arrested late Saturday night after allegedly beating another man with a shopping cart in southwest Miami-Dade, leaving the victim with serious bodily injuries, police said.
Around 10:30 p.m. Saturday night, the Miami-Dade Police Department and the CRF Police Department were on the scene, blocking the roadway near the intersection of Southwest 8th Street and 122nd Avenue.
Police arrested the suspect, Dexter McQueen, 36, who witnesses said was fighting with another man.
Witnesses said McQueen dragged the victim onto the state roadway 90 and began stomping on the victim’s head. He then grabbed a blue shopping cart and hit his head about three times, according to an arrest report.
The victim has not yet been identified but may be homeless and was in critical condition at Kendall Regional Hospital, according to the report.
Mall residents told NBC 6 the victim was well known in the area and often sold water and flowers on Southwest 8th Street.
A retired firefighter stopped at the scene and held the suspect at gunpoint to prevent him from hitting the victim, according to the report.
The suspect was later arrested and transported to Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center where he was charged with attempted second degree murder and assault. McQueen’s bail was set at $100,000 and attorney information was not available.
