One of Alexa’s handy little tricks is keeping a shopping list. If you’ve never used it before, it’s just a matter of saying “Alexa, add [product] to my shopping list” where product is the item you plan to purchase.
You can also say “Alexa, add carrots, onions and garlic to my shopping list” – you do not need to apply for each individual item.
It’s also possible to add to list in the Alexa app, but it’s in the app that it’s more convenient to see the whole list than to ask “Alexa, what’s on my shopping list?” and wait for her to read it, though that’s certainly handy if you need a hands-free (or eyes-free) alternative.
You can use the list in the app while shopping, but if you need to, you can share your list with someone else, either through Alexa or in the Alexa app.
Here we will explain both methods.
The process is as simple as you might hope, although for it to work you must first have created or imported contacts in the Alexa app. In addition, the person must also have the Alexa app.
To add contacts, open the Alexa app, tap Communicate, then tap the people icon at the top. You can then import contacts, edit existing contacts, search and more.
To share your shopping list, just say “Alexa, share my shopping list” and it will ask you who you want to share it with. Say the contact’s name, and that’s it: she’ll send the list.
It works on all Echo devices as well as the Alexa app. The other person will receive it in their Alexa app under the Communicate tab.
This second method is more versatile because you can share the list with other apps in addition to the Alexa app: useful for contacts who don’t have Amazon Echos or the app.
So, open the Alexa app and tap More.
Tap Lists & Notes.
Tap Shopping (or whatever name you gave your listing – you can have multiple listings).
Tap Share, then choose the app to share it with. The apps you see vary depending on what’s installed on your phone and whether you’re using an iPhone or Android. On an iPhone, recent contacts will appear above the list of apps, so you might be able to tap a person without selecting an app.
If you need to choose an app, select the contact to share the list with and follow the on-screen instructions, which again will vary from app to app.
In WhatsApp, for example, you choose the contact, then tap Next, then you can add a message or just tap Send. Similarly, you can text the list by selecting your phone’s messaging app from the sharing panel. On iPhones, you can also choose iMessage.
